"Tree of Life" Memorializes Former Sunnyslope Principal February 2012- The Sunnyslope Kiwanis Club recently dedicated a “tree of life” to the late Owen Layton, former Sunnyslope High School principal and Kiwanian, during a ceremony at the school. The tree was planted on Sunnyslope’s campus, along with a sign commemorating his commitment to serving the community.
Mr. Layton began his career teaching vocational classes at Sunnyslope in the 1970s and even won the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) Sponsor of the Year award in 1975. He returned to Sunnyslope in 1998 as the school’s principal, and he remained in that position until 2003.
Not only was he dedicated to students in his role as principal, but he was also a loyal member of the Sunnyslope Kiwanis Club, whose missions are to exemplify the virtues of “purity, valor, and justice” and “change the world one child and one community at a time.” He was chosen for the Kiwanis Club’s yearly tree of life dedication for staying active in his community and focusing on bettering the lives of students.
Although Layton passed away in 2010, he will now be an enduring fixture on Sunnyslope’s campus for years to come.

This sign commemorates Owen Layton's
dedication to Sunnyslope and the Kiwanis
Club.
